I’m moving home: how will this affect my Child Benefit?

Belgium comprises 3 regions, which each determine their own Child Benefit payment amounts and conditions. If you move to another region, then you’ll be subject to the conditions and payment amounts associated with your new region. If you move within the same region, you’ll continue to be subject to the same conditions and amounts as before.

Are you affiliated with KidsLife and moving to another region in Belgium?

Then it only takes 3 steps to receive child benefit from your new region!

  1. Go to the Population Service of the municipality where you will live.
  2. A neighborhood inspector will come to validate your move. When your change of address is registered in the national register, we receive the information automatically. KidsLife takes care of the transfer of your file.
  3. You will receive a letter from KidsLife confirming the transfer of your file as well as a document from the new region. Just send us back the signed form (by mail or email)!

Does the amount of Child Benefit change with a move to another region?

Yes, because since 2019, the regions manage child allowances. If you move to another region, you will therefore notice changes in amounts but also in conditions to receive Child Benefit.

No stress, KidsLife pays you the maximum amount you are entitled to based on your region, family situation, and household income. To be sure, we will not fail to ask you for the missing information.

For example : on July 7th, the Costa family leaves Brussels to settle in Wallonia. Clara's little brother was receiving a child allowance supplement to help him live with his disability. From August 1st, KidsLife Wallonia takes over the file. Our colleagues will send the necessary documents for Jason's difficulties to be recognized in Wallonia and for him to continue receiving a supplement.

How long does it take to be affiliated with the Child Benefit Fund of the new region?

There is no waiting time. The payment of Child Benefit does not stop: the new Fund will pay the allowances from the month following your move. (For information, child allowances are always paid at the end of the month, like a salary. For example, allowances for the month of August are paid at the beginning of September.)

What is a regularization between regions?

It happens that a change of address is registered with a delay in the national register. In this case, the region you are leaving may have paid your Child Benefit instead of your new region. This is why a regularization between regions must take place: the new Fund/region reimburses the old one. You will receive an information letter regarding this regularization. You don't have to do anything!

For example: on July 15th, the Verbeek family leaves Wallonia for the Brussels region. The registration with the municipality is delayed. KidsLife Brussels is only notified on September 2nd.
KidsLife Wallonia will continue to pay until September, then transfer the file to Brussels. KidsLife Wallonia will ask KidsLife Brussels to reimburse the months of August and September.
In short, we take care of everything and keep you informed!
